Great Yarmouth (2) - Tony Ray-Jones Exhibition

Tony Ray-Jones was an English Photographer born in 1941 and died at age 30 in 1972. The Tide and Time exhibition in Great Yarmouth featured his photographs. These were put together by one of my favourite photographer, Martin Parr.

You can read about him on wikipedia here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Ray-Jones

His work in this exhibition was totally monochrome. One of my lasting impressions after seeing this exhibition is how he took photos of people who had no interaction with the camera, in fact a lot of the photos had the people walking / looking out of the frame. This is the exact opposite to what is currently classified as good club photography. I was so impressed with his images that during the next two days in Yarmouth I tried to emulate his style. The exhibition is called 'Only in England' and is on till April.

One of his quotes where displayed...

"Photography can be a mirror and reflect life as it is, but I also think it is possible to walk, like Alice, through the looking glass and find another world with the camera" - Tony Ray-Jones

Great Yarmouth (1) - Tide and Time Museum

Sue and I and threee friends from the Cambridge Camera Club spent an enjoyable weekend in Yarmouth. One of the first things we did was to visit the Tide and Time Museum.

Wikipedia has this to say

The Museum of Great Yarmouth Life, located in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, United Kingdom, is set in one of the UK's best preserved Victorian herring curing works and is Norfolk's third largest museum.
One of the reason for going was that there was an exhibition on Tony Ray Jones and 1970's photographer - more on that on the next post.

This museum was really good and even after all these years you could still smell the herring in the old smoke house. Well worth a visit.

Out and About to St Ives

The first Cambridge Camera Club Out and About Group outing of the year was supposedly going to be a Bus Trip from Trumpington Park and Ride to Stratford in London for a walk around the Olympic Park and nearby canal, BUT - there was a blockage somewhere on the surrounding roads that meant our bus did not arrive. After almost an hour we decided to take the Guided Bus to St Ives. A lovely day with beautiful light.
